Group 5 Sports Cars, 1972-1975
In 1972, the 5-liter sports car was to become obsolete. This meant top Le Mans contenders like the dominant Porsche 917 were no longer eligible to race in their respective categories. Because this new group replaced the former Group 6 Sports Prototypes category, maximum engine size was reduced to 3000cc and the minimum homologation requirement was removed.
